How to convert salary to hourly pay
Divide your yearly salary by the number of hours you work in a year. With a standard 40-hour week and 52 paid weeks, that's 2,080 hours.
Hourly = Salary ÷ (Hours per week × Weeks per year)
So $60,000 a year ÷ 2,080 hours = about $28.85 an hour. Going the other way, multiply an hourly rate by 2,080 to get a full-time yearly figure.
Quick reference
| Hourly | Yearly (40 h/wk) | Monthly |
|---|---|---|
| $15 | $31,200 | $2,600 |
| $20 | $41,600 | $3,467 |
| $25 | $52,000 | $4,333 |
| $30 | $62,400 | $5,200 |
| $40 | $83,200 | $6,933 |
| $50 | $104,000 | $8,667 |
Gross vs. take-home pay
These figures are before taxes and deductions. Take-home pay is usually 70% to 80% of gross for many US workers, depending on your state, filing status and benefits.
Frequently asked questions
Why does biweekly pay not equal half of monthly?
There are 26 biweekly paychecks in a year but only 12 months, so two months each year have three paychecks. A biweekly check is yearly pay ÷ 26.
How do I compare a salaried job with an hourly one?
Convert both to the same unit, then factor in paid time off, overtime and benefits like health insurance and retirement matching, which can be worth thousands a year.
