How to calculate a tip
Multiply the bill by the tip percentage, then divide by 100. For an $86.40 bill and an 18% tip: 86.40 × 18 ÷ 100 = $15.55. Add that to the bill for a total of $101.95, or about $50.98 each for two people.
Tip = Bill × Tip% ÷ 100
Quick mental math
- 10%: move the decimal point one place left ($86.40 → $8.64).
- 20%: double the 10% amount ($17.28).
- 15%: take 10% and add half of it ($8.64 + $4.32 = $12.96).
How much should you tip?
In the US, 15% to 20% is standard for sit-down restaurant service, with 20% or more for great service. Delivery drivers commonly get 10% to 20% or a few dollars minimum, and hairdressers and taxi drivers usually 15% to 20%. Tipping customs differ a lot by country, so check before you travel.
Frequently asked questions
Should I tip on the total before or after tax?
Traditionally the tip is calculated on the pre-tax amount, but many people tip on the total for simplicity. The difference is small; enter whichever amount you prefer.
How do I split a bill unevenly?
